Snæfellsbær is the largest municipality in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, with a population of around 1,700 living in an area of 644 square km.

The municipality was established with the merging of four municipalities in 1994. Snæfellsbær has continued to evolve and the major industries; fisheries, farming and tourism, have flourished. 

Environmental issues have been a priority since 1998 and Snæfellsbær is part of the first community in Iceland to achieve eco-certification.
